Solar Technical Workshop From 8th To 11th August, 2011

Rains add flavor to GERMI’s Solar Workshop
“If you really want to achieve something, you’ll find a way… if you don’t, you’ll find an excuse”.  Avoiding any such excuses, all 36 participates of the recent Solar Technical Workshop organized by GERMI grabbed the opportunity of installing a 15 kilowatt solar photovoltaic system on the terrace of the Auditorium Building, PDPU, in spite of heavy rains.  Neither could the drizzle dampen the participants’ enthusiasm to visit the 1 megawatt power plant, and wearing raincoats they savored the hot tea and bread-pakoda even more.  The four-day workshop from 8th to 11th August was a success.

GERMI has now concluded its fourth solar workshop, and these workshops are now considered one of the best, if not the best, in India.  The workshops include a comprehensive training on the basics and components of photovoltaic technology, site survey, system design, standards and best practices, project management, hands-on installation and measurement, site study and software training.  Thirty six participants from eight states and two union territories of India from companies like Tata Power, Bosch and even Gujarat’s own Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd. (GUVNL) added a flavor to the workshop through interactive discussions.

Prof. P.S. Deodhar, Founder and Chairman of Aplab Group of Companies and former Advisor to then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on Electronics for ten years, shared his vision as a guest lecturer and talked about novel trends in solar energy.  Prof. Deodhar, with the support of Motivation Engineers and Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd., donated a 3.4 kilowatt solar photovoltaic system along with their proprietary Intelligent Energy Controller (IEC) to PDPU for academicians and researchers at GERMI and PDPU.  The IEC is an indigenously-developed add-on device in a photovoltaic system to further reduce the mismatch losses among modules and DC Ohmic (resistive) losses in wires, and aptly fits Prof. Deodhar’s motto – Indian problems need Indian solutions.

Mr. Arvind Karandikar, Director of Nexus Energytech Pvt. Ltd., shared his twenty-plus years of system designing; Mr. Ashish Mathur from Underwriters Laboratory discussed standards, best practices and certification; while Mr. Deepak Prajapati from Care Ratings talked about various financial aspects of solar projects.

The participants enjoyed the four days learning, discussions, hands-on and the food.  Mr. Anish Sood, Business Development Head of Express Machines and Scaffolding (P) Ltd. commented, “GERMI’s solar training workshop is a comprehensive, hands-on course to kick start your solar career with world-class instructors and facilities.  This is a must-attend programme if solar energy is your cup of tea.”
