MOU Signed between NIO & GERMI-RIIC


MOU Signed between National Institute of Oceanography(NIO), Goa and Gujarat Energy Research & Management Institute, Research, Innovation Incubation Centre (GERMI-RIIC), Gandhinagar.

A Memorandum of understanding has been reached between two research institutes – National Institute of Oceanography, Goa and Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute, Research Centre, Gandhinagar, Gujarat. 

NIO with it’s headquarters at Dona Paula, Goa and regional centres at Kochi, Mumbai and Visakhapatnam is one of the 38 constituent Laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi. The institute has about 200 scientists and 100 technical support staff. The major research areas include the four traditional branches of oceanography - biological, chemical, geological/geophysical, and physical - and some other areas such as marine instrumentation and archaeology. The institute has well equipped laboratories to conduct research in these and multidisciplinary areas. NIO's scientists also have access to the ocean going research vessels ORV Sagar Kanya, Gaveshani, Sindhu Sankalp, Sindhu Sadhana etc. It has wealth of knowledge and expertise developed for the last 40 years in the field of Ocean sciences. It has also executing major research projects related to both basic and applied aspects under Govt. as well as Industry related projects.

GERMI is a scientific and research organization and a Centre for Excellence in industry learning  and was set up to develop human resources to cater to the renewable and non-renewable energy sectors, improve knowledge base of policy-makers and technologists, and provide a competitive edge to leaders to compete in the global arena. GERMI is promoted by the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Ltd., Govt. of Gujarat. GSPC is a fully integrated energy company having a presence in various operations like Exploration, Production, Gas Transportation, Power Generation and IT services. It is one of the fastest growing state owned companies and has excellent support from Gujarat Govt. as well as from the Central Government. It has established Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University for encouraging energy education in India, which is having five different schools under it. GERMI has also initiated research and innovation activities in the area of Oil and Gas, Solar, Environment and Climate Change.

Both the institutes are interested in collaboration in the field of energy and other areas of common relevance. They include, research and training in the thrust areas of science and technology, with special reference to the marine environment, joint consultancy assignments, joint research programmes funded by DST, DSIR/CSIR, MoES and a few others, delineation of natural resources with funding support from GSPC, technology Management and technology transfer.
