Former Directors

Prof. V.P. Dimri, FNA, FNASc, FTWAS
Former Director, GRIIC

Prof. V.P. Dimri, joined as the second Director of GERMI Research, Innovation & Incubation Centre, Gandhinagar on 2nd March 2010 till 26th October, 2010. Earlier he was Director, NGRI (CSIR) Hyderabad.

He completed his post graduation and Ph.D. from the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, India. He joined NGRI in 1970 as JRF and became the Director in October 2001. He was endowed with prestigious PDF in Norway for 1986-1988 and was awarded Senior DAAD Fellowship in 1996 at University of Kiel, Germany. Dr Dimri was Visiting Fellow of Norwegian Research Council, Oslo in 1999. Earlier, in 1977, he obtained advanced training for one and a half years at Geological Survey of Germany, Hannover. He is also currently Adjunct Professor of the University of Hyderabad; Department of Geophysics, Osmania University, Hyderabad and Honorary Professor of Andhra University, Visakhapatnam.

Dr. Dimri finds himself among the relatively small number of earth scientists who have also made significant and original contributions to exploration geophysics. He established a parallelism between deconvolution and inversion, which are two important tools of geophysical signal processing used in exploration of oil & gas, and mineral. Thus, he opened a new area of research in the field of earth sciences. His early work dealt with various geophysical signal processing issues, which he applied to the solution of challenging seismic, magnetic, and gravity problems. Dr. Dimri made pioneering contributions in the field of non-linear signal analysis using fractals and its applications in geophysical data. He has proposed a fractal based modeling and inversion schemes for seismic data analysis and gravity and magnetic studies.

To his credit, Dr Dimri has about 100 international and national publications, 3 filed patents (1 accepted by US) and 3 authored/edited books entitled (1) Deconvolution and Inverse Theory (Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1992), (2) Application of Fractals in Earth Science (Balkema, U.S.A. 2000) and (3) Fractal Behaviour of the earth system (Springer, Germany, 2005). His first book was declared as a ‘Didactical Masterpiece’ and reference book in the field of inversion by Prof. M. Koch of USA.

To be at par with international research, he designed major scientific programmes in the sectors of ‘Energy Security’, ‘Water Security’, ‘Ocean Studies’ and ‘Frontier research areas of international repute’. Currently he is pioneering a pilot project to enhance oil recovery from Indian oil wells in collaboration with Norwegian scientists.

Dr Dimri has been elected as Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Italy. Earlier, Dr Dimri became the first Asian recipient of the prestigious Lorenz Award of the American Geophysical Union in 2007. He is recipient of the prestigious National Mineral Award and DOD Award, Govt of India, Outstanding Scientist Award of FAPCCI, Chatterjee Award of ISCA, presented by the PM. Dr Dimri’s contributions have been recognized through the Fellowship of Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences and AP Akademi of Sciences. Currently Dr. Dimri is President of the Indian Geophysical Union.and AP Akademi of Sciences. Dr Dimri is also serving as Member of various National and International Scientific Committees. He was Sectional President, Earth Systems Science of the Indian Science Congress Association, ISCA-2008. His Presidential Address “Geological Sequestration of CO2 for Reducing Global Warming” at ISCA-2008 and “Geo thermal potential in Uttarakhand” at IGU convention-2009 were well received.

Dr Dimri has been conferred Padma Shri by President of India on 7th April 2010.
